How can I make my eyes look smaller and still wear mascara?

This sounds like a bit of a weird question but my eyes are huge!! In pictures they look so wide it's almost creepy, even when I'm smiling. I feel weird not wearing mascara though, but I think that's part of what makes my eyes look so big. What can I do to make my eyes look smaller even when I'm wearing mascara?
