I don't know if its still considered self injury. Its just an addicting habit. I find myself constantly thinking about pulling, strand by strand.
Sometimes it takes my mind off of cutting, so I thought that maybe it was a good alternative.
The way I see it, it causes me less harm to pull hair than cut my arms.
Any advice or helpful information?

yea, I think you need to talk to to someone.
I would say yes, and you should talk to your parents if it takes your mind off the other thing, either way your phyically hurting yourself
First get help and second get Bald!!
I know someone who does what you do and now part of their hair doesnt grow back. Its nothing more than fuzz. Cutting is also stupid. One thing you have to do is to learn to deal with your problems like a mature adult.
And for those who put a thumbs down on my comment screw you. Just because I had the guts to say what I felt without beating around the bush because everybody else is too stupid to say what they feel doesnt mean my comment is bad. Grow up get help.
What you've described is call Trichotillomania, which is an obsession with pulling out one's own hair.
It is a form of self-harm.
There are online communities that can help you find more information, and helf if you want it.
I don't have any medical training, but I once knew a young
woman who would pull her hair out until she was bald.
It's called "self-mutilation".
I would suggest see a psychologist.
pulling your hair or cutting won't help and both are very dangerous.i have been there although mine was different.i will advise you bring yourself to face every problem in front of you and try finding solutions to each slow and steady.
remember to never ever regret anything of the past because that will draw you back.
goodluck
Yes it is a form of self injury.
The motives and severity can turn it to a disease, i cant remember its name though.
Other forms of self injury are starving, scratching, burning, cutting, hair pulling, air restriction, all sorts of things.
Hair pulling is harder to hide once you start pulling it out not just pulling on it. Cutting is easier to hide in my opinion and the pain is greater. But hair pulling wont leave you with scars…
Yes, unless it's hyperbole.
Often this urge is one way that OCD shows itself. A few other ways are in counting, repeating phrases, checking and rechecking to see if you turned off appliances, etc. My guess is that you have a mild form of OCD. But get checked and find out. The good news is that their are many really good treatments today for OCD.
Good luck!
Yep, it's another form of self injury - just like burning, picking etc… But it isn't what i'd call a 'good' alternative. If you don't want to hurt yourself - but still need the self injury to get by then yeah, i guess that whatever causes you the least amount of actual harm is definitely best.
Of course there are other options - i'm sure you've already considered or been told about. But just in case, exercise is known to help depression as well as a way to channel self injurous urges, and of course there is councilling and various types of psychotherapy if you want to stop.
its like a stress thing a friend of mine pulled out her eyebrows seek help b4 u loose all ur hair
regardless of pulling one's hair out or cutting, this is a sign that you are being over stimulated- either not enough sleep, too much stress ect.
i have found more often than not that drinks that contain vitamins and caffiene such as "Rockstar" and drinking too much can cause one to become anxious and moody.
The only good alternative to your issue is finding out what type of things trigger it (cutting or hair pulling) and work on a solution.
Cutting, hair pulling ect is a form of OCD. You have to figure a way to get through it.
It is not about immaturity- I know many adults who do some pretty strange things like drink alcohol, do drugs (over the coutner or illegal), smoke cigarettes or over/under eat. Some speed, have road rage, mean to kids or animals or are packrats or are addicted to gambling, the internet, gaming ect….
Just like I'm addicted to Yahoo Q and A.
Keep a journal! :o)
Pulling out one's own hair is called trichotillomania. It's classified as an Impulse Control Disorder in the DSM-IV but some people consider it to be a form of OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder).
It's usually not classified as self-injury, but if you're doing it for the sole purpose of hurting yourself then, in your case, it is SI. Trichotillomania is a recognized disorder; you can talk to your doctor about it without them thinking you're "crazy" –and without brining up cutting yourself– if you want help with it. A search for "trichotillomania" will bring you to a large number of sites with more comprehensive information if you want it. Good luck.
