What is the best way to put mascara on your lower lashes so that only my lashes get covered and not my skin?

I've only been using mascara for 4 years (I'm 44) so maybe I just haven't gotten it yet. I see women with mascara on their lower lashes only and not a black line under their lashes on the skin like mine always seems to turn out like. I want mine to look like theirs. How do I put it on without getting it on my skin?
